Figure of Eight Events provided a temporary power solution for Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru's production of Macbeth at Caerphilly Castle.
The production used three of the castle’s main inside spaces, all of which lended themselves very well to the performance but gave the production team a number of challenges to overcome. Equipment weight, height and width posed a problem as did building the production around a castle open to the general public. The production power had to be synchronised as the performances were being televised to 14 other locations live. Furthermore, the system needed to have the ability to cross patch on to the castle's power supplies to reduce the production's carbon footprint overnight. The generator package then provided the much needed electrical demand and redundancy for the performances.
One of the most interesting challenges occurred as the castles two main bridges each have a weight limit of 3000kg, yet the lightest synchronised generators are normally around 2600kg alone and with a towing vehicle, in excess of 5000kg. Figure of Eight designed a winch system to individually bring each generator and fuel tank trailer inside the castle, giving the production a fully backed up power solution within the castle walls. Over 500m of heavy mains cables, weatherproof distribution boards and cable ramp were all deployed from the compound to each of the three locations. These were then all cabled back to a central location where a number of transfer switches allowed for the key elements to remain powered in the damp overnight conditions.
Head of Production, Angharad Mair Davies commented "Figure of Eight Events were professional, hardworking and a very accommodating company. Nothing was too much for Rich Rayner who supported the production immensely. It makes a great difference having a team of jolly, happy gentlemen arrive on a cold and wet site! Thanks Figure of Eight! It was pleasure working with you."
